Banana Splits

  • A few years ago, I was meeting with a first grade student who declared, “It’s not fair.  I’m the only kid in school whose parents don’t live together.” It became a goal for me to show my students how many similar family compositions are represented here at Seaford Harbor School.

Banana Splits is a group for students that meet to discuss issues surrounding family.  Someone who is eligible for the group has parents who do not live in the same house or are from single parent homes. The parents do not have to be divorced, nor does a child have to visit the other parent.  The goals for this group include the following: to provide a supportive and safe place to explore thoughts and feelings about family changes, to identify healthy and unhealthy ways of coping with family changes, to share experiences with others to help normalize the feelings associated with parental separation/divorce, and to identify the special qualities that continue in families after divorce.

During the group, students will share their feelings surrounding these issues, play games, and participate in various activities.  This group has been a success in the past and I am looking forward to working with your child.   If you are interested in having your child participate, please contact me at 516.592.4171.
