-
There are a variety of counseling services offered at Seaford Harbor School. These services are not meant to be a replacement for outside counseling. School counseling is meant to assist students so that their are able to function at their best of their ability so that any social or emotional concerns do not impact hinder their academic success.
For small group counseling, I send home a permission form that lets parents know what topic will be covered, and the goals of the group. Parents have the option of allowing their child to participate or decline the invitation to the small group. In cases where the sessions are a mandated service in an IEP, the sessions are mandatory, however, I will still send home an questionare so that you can provide background information on your child, and provide any updated information you feel would be helpful for me to know.
For classroom-based counseling, teachers sign-up for units based on what he/she thinks the students need most. Common topics include: self-esteem, making and keeping friends, positive school behaviors, and bullying.
To receive individual counseling, a student is able to come to my office to talk about things that impact their learning in school, such as friendships, study skills, self esteem, and test anxiety. To occur, there must be a need that cannot be met by the other programs listed above. The goal is to meet with the child regularly at first and then slowly decrease services to an “as needed” basis. I look forward to these opportunities to meet with the students throughout the school year, and to help each child be successful both academically and socially.
I am also happy to introduce Mrs. Colby Siergiej a graduate social work student at Fordham University. She will be working with me the entire year as my intern as part of her field placement. She is wonderful and I am so excited to have her as part of our Harbor Family.
If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact me at 516.592.4171. I would be happy to work with you to make your child’s time at the Harbor great! Thank you!
