Next Generation Paper Airplanes "For once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci

In October 2016, students first began this project by researching what makes a paper airplane fly. They started with simple planes and had one goal to get it to fly. After understanding a little bit more about the science behind paper airplanes, Ms. Shirreffs used the Next Generation Paper Airplanes Maker Kit with her sixth grade science exploratory students. They built several of the different models from the activity kit. Students wanted to see what plane design was best at gliding through the air, which had the best air time, and which could be thrown most accurately. They learned that each design was unique and the detail between each and every fold determined how the plane would fly. Aerodynamics, airplane design and physics were explored in this hands-on project. Mrs. Golub, our middle school library media specialist is an FAA licensed airplane airline transport pilot with Citation Jet and Boeing 737 type ratings and is also an FAA certified flight instructor who enjoyed collaborating with Ms. Shirreffs on this project. Click here for highlights of this Paper Airplanes Project

 

On November 14th and 15th, Mrs. Melissa Levine's SSC sixth grade Science class created hands-on projects related to our solar system in the library. Students had previously researched the planets of our solar system using library books. Through these interactive activities, students hand painted and built models of our solar system and further understood how the planets revolve around the sun. After painting, students worked together in teams to put together two separate jigsaw puzzles with solar system themes. In class on November 16th, students received handouts from one of the kits that featured fun facts about the planets of our solar system.

 

K'NEX Education by Kid K'NEX Group Set - Making Connections! "Design is a journey of discovery." - Derek Parker

On November 15th, students in Mrs. Patricia Smith's CDP Life Skills class had fun putting together miscellaneous pieces of the Kid K'NEX Group Set, which included instructional 1:1 correspondence cards to make different models of various characters.  Fall into Books and Color Your Own Bookmarks!"A book is a device to ignite the imagination." - Alan Bennett

In November 2016, check out any book from the Seaford Middle School Library and receive a free bookmark that you can color and design to your liking to mark your pages. Reading Round Table-Falling Into Books and Coloring Bookmarks "The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it." - James Bryce

On November 16th and 18th, the Reading Round Table exploratory class taught by Mrs. Carin Hoy visited the library and colored their own fall themed bookmarks. In addition, previous visits included book selections for students and time for them to read in our comfortable reading area in the library. Book discussions will follow soon! Color-Your-Own Greeting Cards and Envelopes Greeting cards are a way to keep in touch with others and express emotions. Our world is now dominated by digital communication, but a hand designed card can mean so much to both the maker and the recipient. 

This event is available to all grade levels the end of November and beginning of December 2016 during selected lunch periods. Listen to the morning announcements and sign up in the library. Students will color and design their own greeting cards and envelopes with selected themes. This event is on a first come, first served basis to the first thirty students who make a reservation!

Do you love fashion or aspire to be a fashion designer? Customize and design your own outfits, handbags, t-shirts, casual attire, evening wear and discuss fashion with other students. Be a showstopper and design your own fashion show with outfits, guest lists of who you would invite and create a playlist of your favorite music. This event is available to all grade levels in December 2016 during selected lunch periods. Listen to the morning announcements and sign up in the library.
