WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE? A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools.  These spaces are open to kids, adults, and entrepreneurs and have a variety of maker equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, cnc machines, soldering irons and even sewing machines.  A makerspace however doesn’t need to include all of these machines or even any of them to be considered a makerspace.  If you have cardboard, legos and art supplies you’re in business.  It’s more of the maker mindset of creating something out of nothing and exploring your own interests that’s at the core of a makerspace. (Makerspaces.com)

The Seaford Middle School Library Media Center Makerspace supports the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program and incorporates Art (STEAM) as well. Both STEM and STEAM programs offer an interdisciplinary curriculum in those areas that accommodate a wide variety of activities, tools and materials. Our “makerspace” is the heart for hands-on, project-based learning, creations and inventions.

Students can use the following resources for our Makerspace which is just beginning and will expand over time. Listen to the morning announcements for special themed events. Students can get lunch passes to use selected Makerspace items. Teachers, please see Mrs. Golub about booking class time in the library media center for Makerspace projects and browse the items in our new Makerspace room in the library media center. Teachers can also check out some of the Makerspace items to use with their classes or after school clubs. We want a school community of thinkers, makers and life-long learners. Mrs. Golub welcomes your additional input and ideas for expansion. Also, if anyone is interested in donating new items for our Makerspace, please let Mrs. Golub know! Thank you!
