Here are some tips and steps you can take to continue to be successful during your junior year.

    College Campus Events

For those families that have planned college visits (Admission Information Sessions or Accepted Student Days) during the next few weeks, you are encouraged to check with the schools as many events have been postponed. Click here to be brought to a website with current information about many colleges/universities. College Board has also made available college virtual tours which include admission specific information.  (*If this link does not open on your school device, try your phone or an alternate device. The website may be slow as there are tons of other users accessing the information.)

    Standardized Test Preparation

We are encouraging all students to continue to prepare for future tests. Here are some helpful test preparation sites:

Khan Academy: Khan Academy has partnered with the College Board, creators of the SAT, to provide students with a free, personalized practice plan based on the student’s PSAT/NMSQT® results. You can create an account at www.khanacademy.org.

The Princeton Review: The Princeton Review is a web-based SAT/ACT Preparation program to which all SHS students have free access. In order to create an account, at no cost to you, click here to gain access.

    Course Requests/Scheduling

Each year, students meet with their school counselor to formally request courses for the upcoming year. The following criteria is considered during the course selection process: current course level and grades as well as teacher recommendations. We always encourage students to challenge themselves with Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses where appropriate. Students should be aware that any AP level course is a college level course, and very rigorous. Students should strive to create balance in their life in order to reduce stress while still choosing an academically rigorous schedule. Any requests to modify a student’s courses for next year should be directed to their school counselor no later than May 1st.

    Naviance – Postsecondary Exploration

Naviance is a comprehensive K-12 college and career readiness platform that enables self-discovery, career exploration, academic planning, and college preparation.  This program is an integral part of our individual junior meetings with students and families. Please follow these simple directions to begin planning and researching for your future today:

    • Each student has a unique registration code that will activate their Naviance account. Please email your School Counselor directly for this code.
    • Once you have received this code, visit the Seaford HS Naviance website and on the right-hand side, you will see a link stating, “I need to register.”  Select that link to enter the registration code given to you by your counselor. This will direct you to the account creation page where you will enter your email address and create a password for your new account.
    • Feel free to type in any college in the search bar at the top and it will provide you access to information regarding that school, including a direct link to their website. If you are looking to generate a college search, click ‘Colleges’ at the top right of the screen to access the Colleges home page. The link titled “SuperMatch” or "Advanced College Search" will bring you to a screen where you will be able to navigate your search criteria based on several factors. Important factors to consider are: Location, Academics and Institutional Characteristics. (*Note: not all questions must be answered to generate a list)
    • A good way to expand on this created list, would be to utilize YouTube. Type in any school name and ‘tour’ to the end and enjoy aerial tours of a campus, as well as information regarding the school. Please be aware that some videos uploaded to YouTube are not appropriate for this college exploration process.
    • Please contact your counselor with any questions.  Good luck!
