Classwork for Monday, April 27, 2020
Reading:
- Review:
- Introduction: Authors use comparisons to help us picture the setting and understand how characters feel.
- Read the page below: Think of the two things that are being compared. Think about how they are alike. How is the girl like a sizzling hot potato? What is the author trying to tell you?
- Go to Epic! Listen to the story,” Come On, Rain” by Karen Hesse. Listen for when the author compares two things. Think about how the two things are alike.
Writing:
- Last week you learned that a simile is a way to compare two things using the words “like” or “as.” This week you will be learning about metaphors. A metaphor is a way to compare two things without using the words “like” or “as.”
- Click here to view the video, “What are Metaphors?”
- Open and read the attachment: Similes and Metaphors. Read more about the difference between them.
- Do the Simile or Metaphor Worksheet. (Please send me a picture via Remind or e-mail)
Word Work:
- This week's trick words are: Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday. What is tricky about each of these words? Add them to your Spelling Dictionary.
- Open the attachment: Trick Words 14-1. This is more trick word practice. (You may print and complete this page or do this work on a piece of lined paper.) (Please send me a picture via Remind or e-mail)
Math:
- Watch “Parts of a Clock” on Brain Pop Jr. Then take the easy quiz or challenge yourself with the hard quiz!
- Optional: Make a paper plate clock. You can watch this short video to show how you could make your clock. You probably do not have a paper fastener at home, so you can just place your hands on the clock to show different times. If you'd like, you can print the Printable Clockface and glue it to a plate.
Science:
- Read “Monarch Butterfly” by Gail Gibbons on Epic!
- Take a look at our new class pet on our Butterflies Webpage! Observe the photo of the caterpillars on "Day 1." Write 2-3 sentences about your observations and draw a picture. You can print out the "Butterfly Journal" on the butterfly page or you can staple a few pieces of paper together to make your own Butterfly Journal. (Please send me a picture via Remind or e-mail)

-But it is more powerful to make comparisons!
-It makes the story more interesting. It helps you picture the setting and understand how the characters feel.
3. Read independently for 20 minutes. You can read books you have at home, or books on Epic! or Raz-Kids. While you are reading, pay attention to when the author uses comparisons.
Writing:
- Metaphors compare two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as.”
- Today you will take another look at the simile poem you wrote last week and rewrite it using metaphors. To complete the activity, open the attachment: Writing with Metaphors. (Please send me a picture via Remind or e-mail)
